Applications Engineer (Linux) for Desktop Solutions Group
Title: Member of Technical Staff
The Desktop Solutions group at VMware is responsible for delivering a compelling and innovative desktop interaction experience to virtually all VMware users. This team is responsible for Windows, Linux and Macintosh application development for VMware Workstation, VMware ACE, VMware Player, VMware Fusion and much more. Additionally, the team's charter is to push the innovation envelope by finding new ways to integrate with products such as VMware VirtualCenter, VMware Server and others. Our software is used on a daily basis by millions of people and constitutes the primary desktop environment for a large and rapidly growing number of users.
As an Applications Engineer, you will:
Help define the requirements of new products and features, and collaborate on the user interface design.
Design and own key components of our applications.
Develop flexible, reusable code that can be shared in multiple applications.
Ship quality desktop and server applications to hundreds of thousands of customers.
Requirements
3+ years experience of commercial software product development.
Experience with software development in C/C++.
Familiarity with Linux application development (gtk+, Qt, wxWidgets).
Excellent design, programming and debugging skills.
Excellent user interaction design and visual design acumen.
Strong analytical skills, good judgment, passion for your work.
BSCS, MSCS or equivalent.
Ties to the open source community.

Requirements
* Extensive hands on experience in core design and development of user interfaces to complex enterprise systems management. Strong commitment to technical excellence.
* Ability to conceive and design architectural solutions based on a variety of technologies and platforms including distributed systems management, network management, and web services.
* Strong Java GUI development skills, including JSP, JavaScript, servlets, SWT/Eclipse. Struts XML, xslt, other GUI development frameworks a plus, graphical design with human factors experience a plus.
* Excellent user level skills, preferably Linux/Unix. Strong experience in GUI design and modeling techniques, OS level skills a plus.
* Demonstrated deep technical knowledge across the entire software stack, including: system management, distributed systems, network management, highly scalable and available enterprise software, and network or storage virtualization.
* MS CS or equivalent, min 5 years core development in Java or C++, GUI toolkits and componentry, excellent communication skills.
