<title>Intrannuity's iBilling Library 1.0 is released</title>
<link>http://www.ibillingclient.org.</link>
<description>Due to tremendous demand for a multi-purpose, secure, and easy to integrate with payment engine, Intrannuity releases iBilling, its subscription and recurring billing and transaction processing system.

iBilling is an enterprise-level, SOA-based J2EE billing platform that provides a full spectrum of recurring billing and subscription/account management functionality. iBilling provides specific functionality required by the majority of member and donor centric organizations, including a clean and simple way to process one-time (pos/retail) and batch credit card and bank account (ACH) transactions.

iBilling also provides account management (secure/encrypted storage of credit cards and bank accounts), flexible subscription setup (recurring billing using different billing terms and different time cycles), effective subscription management (cancellation of subscription, billing skips (freezes), prepayments against future billings), automated decline/chargeback processing.

All of the functionality is exposed via a web-based portal that additionally provides OLAP-based reports (billing breakdown, billing cycle entry/exit, revenue forecasting). To get more information or sign-up for a test account go to http://www.intrannuity.com.

To simplify integration with Intrannuity’s iBilling, a special open source initiative – iBilling Client Library - was created. The goal behind the library is to greatly reduce integration time necessary to get any 3rd party product to work with iBilling. The library uses web-services model to communicate with the billing server and currently supports Java, .NET, PHP, Ruby and ColdFusion environments. Code samples with most common use cases in every supported language and detailed documentation are available on library’s web-site at http://www.ibillingclient.org.

<title>Learn to Design Web Themes and Templates with New Wiki</title>
<link>http://www.themeswiki.org</link>
<description> p ThemesWiki.org is a new website designed to provide users with comprehensive, free guides for designing Web Themes and Templates. This site intends to ease the web design process by providing tutorials for a large number of systems at a common location. /p
p It is often difficult to find a resource that is focused on providing quality, relevant and free information for designing themes and templates; specifically one that covers a wide range of applications. This is where ThemesWiki.org intends to step in. Launched initially with tutorials covering over 20 Content Management Systems, ThemesWiki.org is expected to grow into an exhaustive resource for the theming community, with users generating most of the content. /p
p “ThemesWiki.org promises to fill a much needed gap in the theming and templating community” said Ric Shreves, author of the Packt book, . “It is a source of information that cuts across systems and provides designers and developers a place to share ideas and approaches outside of the walled gardens of individual project sites.” Shreves, a partner in Water + Stone, an open source web development company, went on to say that “Mambo, Joomla, Drupal, Plone, Modx — whatever — none of the clients really care and frankly it matters less and less as time goes by What we should be concerned with is the end result, and that is where this site comes in.' /p
p ThemesWiki.org is part of an ongoing process at Packt to develop unique methods of contributing to the Open Source community. Notable other initiatives include the website on free installation tutorials, a target='_blank' href='http://www.installationwiki.org/' www.InstallationWiki.org /a , and the annual a target='_blank' href='http://www.packtpub.com/award' Open Source CMS Award /a that has a total prize package of $20,000 to be divided among several winning projects. /p
p ThemesWiki.org has been developed using the open source MediaWiki software package and has initially been populated using chapters from Packt books. ThemesWiki.org is free to use and open for everyone to contribute to. It is expected to grow and expand over the coming months with more tutorials added by users. /p

<title>OpenClinica Community Surpasses 3,500 Members</title>
<link>http://www.openclinica.org</link>
<description>OpenClinica Community Surpasses 3,500 Members; Increases 155% in One Year

Popularity Further Establishes OpenClinica as the Most Widely Used Open Source System for eClinical Research

(Cambridge, MA) April 22, 2008 -- An increase in the interest and use of open source in clinical research has led to rapid growth of the community surrounding the OpenClinica open source clinical trial software from Akaza Research. In April 2007 this community comprised approximately 1,300 registered members. One year later, this figure has increased by 155 percent to over 3,500.

'The growth of the OpenClinica community has surpassed pretty much everybody’s expectations,' said Paul Galvin, OpenClinica’s Project Manager. 'When you consider the finite size of the clinical trials industry, this figure represents a fairly substantial proportion of practitioners in the field.'

According to Galvin, “the OpenClinica community is adding about 65 new members each week.” At this rate, the community could be twice as large one year from now as it is today.

The OpenClinica community was inaugurated in early 2006, shortly after the first public release of the software. Since then the clinical trials software has been downloaded over 10,000 times, leading to adoption in more than 20 countries around the world, translation into multiple languages, and numerous contributions of source code and other improvements from developers in the community.

Indeed, the collective efforts of the community drive value for each participating party. 'Many CROs, clinical trial sponsors, and research networks are recognizing the increased value that a well-supported open source solution can deliver,' said Cal Collins, CEO of Akaza Research. 'We share a belief that a global ecosystem based on open source and open standards is a foundation for the next generation of clinical research.'

About OpenClinicaŽ

OpenClinica is open source, web-based clinical trial software for electronic data capture and clinical data management in clinical research. It facilitates protocol configuration, design of case report forms, clinical data capture, and study/data management. OpenClinica supports HIPAA, GCP, and 21 CFR Part 11 guidelines and is designed as a lightweight, standards-based, extensible, and modular platform. OpenClinica is available for download at www.OpenClinica.org.

<title>New Drupal 6 Book Published</title>
<link>http://www.packtpub.com/drupal-6-create-powerful-websites/book</link>
<description>Following the latest release of Drupal 6 in February 2008, Packt Publishing is pleased to announce an update to David Mercer’s best selling Drupal 4.7 book. Building powerful and robust websites with Drupal 6 is as much of an overhaul of the original book as Drupal 6 is over Drupal 4.7.

Drupal is a hugely popular and widely celebrated open-source Content Management System that is day-by-day becoming the first choice of people for building blogs and other websites. Sir Tim Berners-Lee, Hillary Clinton, and many others utilize Drupal to fulfil their online requirements.

The updated book meets the booming demand for well presented, clear, concise, and above all practical information on how to move from establishing the need for a website all the way through to designing and building it like a pro, and finally successfully managing and maintaining it.

Experienced technical author David Mercer expertly guides the reader through all the stages of building a professional website in a plain, articulate manner. “This book, like its predecessor, is still aimed at predominantly beginners, although I suspect many intermediate users of Drupal will find it useful too” explains Mercer. “In comparison to the first book, this update provides a steeper launching ramp to the more technical and professional aspects of Drupal.”

Written in the same style as the original Drupal title, this book is a pragmatic look at the steps necessary to get a website up and running. Drawing on years of writing experience, David Mercer utilizes a friendly, engaging style that is both clear and concise – perfect for the Drupal newbie.

'I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the a href='http://www.nooku.org/partners.html' title='' funders /a for being so supportive of our project,' Johan added. 'Without their vision and support we would not be where we are today ... and where we are at this moment is on the verge of a Joomla! 1.5 framework technology explosion. We at Joomlatools are extremely excited and we believe the community will be encouraged by this as it's the tip of the iceberg of what's to come.' /p You can visit Nooku at a title='www.nooku.org' href='/' www.nooku.org /a . <link>http://www.packtpub.com/django-website-development-tutorial/book</link>
<description> is a new book from Packt which is a beginner's tutorial to building web applications, quickly and cleanly, with the Django application framework. Written by Ayman Hourieh, this book is a beginner's guide to designing, developing and deploying a fully-featured dynamic website using the features of Django.
 p
a target='_blank' href='http://www.djangoproject.com' title='Django' Django /a is a high-level Python web framework that was developed by a fast-moving online-news operation to meet the stringent twin challenges of newsroom deadlines and the needs of web developers. It is designed to promote rapid development and clean, pragmatic design and lets users build high-performing, elegant web applications rapidly. <title>The Northeast Kansas Library System Selects Koha ZOOM</title>
<link>http://liblime.com/news-items/press-releases/the-northeast-kansas-library-system-selects-koha-zoom</link>
<description>DALLAS, TX--April 16, 2008-- LibLime, the leader in open-source solutions for libraries, and The Northeast Kansas Library System (NEKLS) announced today that the 116 library consortium has selected a Koha ZOOM hosted system for their next integrated library system and union catalog.

The Northeast Kansas Library System (NEKLS) is a multi-type regional library system serving 116 libraries in a 14-county region. NEKLS will be using Koha ZOOM to run 'NExpress', their regional shared ILS and courier service. The Koha installation will be hosted off-site at one of LibLime's secure data centers. NEKLS has also contracted with LibLime for data migration, support and training services.

'After examining the major ILS systems, NEKLS believes that Koha ZOOM is the most refined, flexible and well-supported system in the open-source ILS market,' says Jim Minges, Director of NEKLS.

Jim explains why NEKLS chose an open-source ILS: 'NExpress has used a major proprietary ILS system for five years, and the difficulty in making system revisions within that proprietary software system have been too cumbersome to meet service needs. NEKLS believes that it is time to stop being a passenger and start driving its own ILS system. That means a transition to an open-source system.'

NEKLS is looking forward to the ease of customizing Koha features to meet system and library-level preferences. 'Koha will enable seamless access by all users to the resources in all NEKLS/NExpress libraries, and even gives us the ability to combine the OPAC with library open-source websites,' adds Jim.

NEKLS is strongly committed to a future in which libraries actively control and contribute to their own information services. 'We are really excited about the possibilities of sharing system improvements with others in the Koha community,' says Jim.

Among the open-source library software services that NEKLS already manages are: the Kanguard statewide content filtering service utilizing the SquidGuard open-source URL director software; the My Kansas Library on the Web (MyKLOW)--a library website service utilizing Wordpress software; and the NEKLS Tech Weblog.

The Northeast Kansas Library System (NEKLS) is the 7th consortium to choose Koha ZOOM in the last eight months.

About The Northeast Kansas Library System (NEKLS)

The Northeast Kansas Library System (NEKLS) is a multi-type regional library system serving 116 libraries in a 14-county region. The NEKLS vision is for libraries to be recognized and respected for providing convenient access to state-of-the-art library resources and outstanding customer service. Taking a leadership role in placing state-of-the-art technology in the hands of member libraries, and working in a shared technology environment with libraries throughout Kansas, are key strategies to reaching that vision. NEKLS provides a spectrum of services including training and consulting, technology services, advocacy, recognition of library service improvement, and grants to libraries. One of the flagship NEKLS services is NExpress, a regional shared ILS and courier service.

<title>Independently Cooperating Ashtabula Network (ICAN) Chooses Koha ZOOM</title>
<link>http://liblime.com/news-items/press-releases/ashtabula-county-ican-consortium-chooses-koha/</link>
<description>ATHENS, OH - March 27, 2008 - LibLime, the leader in open-source solutions for libraries announced today that the Independently Cooperating Ashtabula Network (ICAN) has selected Koha ZOOM for their next integrated library system (ILS) and union catalog.

ICAN is a public library consortium in Ashtabula County, Ohio. The consortium's six public libraries have approximately 235,000 items in their combined collections and an annual circulation of about 705,000.

ICAN has selected the hosted Koha ZOOM solution, wherein the installation will be hosted at one of LibLime's carrier-class data centers. LibLime will be providing ICAN with software installation, data migration, and ongoing support services.

'Andover, Conneaut, Harbor Topky, Henderson, Kingsville and Rock Creek Public Libraries have been considering and reviewing open source automation systems since January 2005,' said the consortium in a joint statement. 'In 2007, we began to review all our fiscal responsibilities more thoroughly. That review showed that changes in technology have created better and less expensive methods to serve library patrons. Also, because the technology utilized currently is being phased out, in reviewing our options, we decided Koha offered a better collaborative automation system.'

LibLime's open-source business model was a major consideration for ICAN when they chose Koha and LibLime for support. 'We are so excited about all the benefits of open source. Not only will it save us substantially compared to our current system for four of the libraries, but the benefits of customizing the software to do exactly what we want far outweighs the traditional proprietary ILS vendors,' says Kathleen L. Jozwiak, Director of the Henderson Memorial Public Library.

'We will get what we pay for this time unlike the proprietary vendor who may or may not implement a requested change,' Kathleen continues. 'With open source, the software is free. Maintenance support with a company like LibLime is cost-effective, and enhancements can be made quickly to meet staff and patron needs more efficiently.'

Koha offers ICAN significant improvements over their current system on both the patron and staff interfaces: 'We are excited about the patron interface which allows for Internet-style searching like Google and Amazon.com. Patrons will love the ease of searching and requesting materials. The ease of moving between screens for check-out, requests, etc., will make the staff’s job easier. Staff have been emphatic at seeing this as a vast improvement over our current ILS systems.'

The move to Koha will help facilitate greater collaboration and cooperation between consortial members: 'The bond between several of the libraries in Ashtabula County has been greatly strengthened,' their joint statement continues. 'That spirit of collaboration and cooperation has resulted in a plan to restructure the cooperative effort in such a manner so that each library will play an equal role. Therefore, the move to the Koha open-source automaton system will enhance this new, cooperative organization which stems from a spirit of unity. We are confident that the changes being considered will better serve library patrons.'

ICAN is the sixth US consortium to select LibLime's Koha ZOOM in the last six months.

<title>Santa Cruz Public Library Selects Koha </title>
<link>http://liblime.com/news-items/press-releases/santa-cruz-public-library-selects-koha</link>
<description>ATHENS, OH--March 25, 2008-- LibLime, the leader in open-source solutions for libraries, announced today that Santa Cruz Public Library in California USA, has selected LibLime's Koha ZOOM Appliance solution as the library's next integrated library system. Koha is the first and most advanced open-source integrated library system.

Santa Cruz County Public Library (SCPL) has a central library and 9 branches, and boasts an annual circulation of approximately 2 million items. LibLime will be providing the library with software installation, data migration, and ongoing support services.

'We are convinced that open-source products provide greater functionality and control over what we can do with an ILS system,' says Dan Landry, Director of IT for the library. 'The ILS world is in turmoil right now. Systems have decreased in number, especially in terms of offerings for public libraries.'

SCPL has made productive use of open-source tools for the past eight years, and choosing the open-source Koha was a natural next step. 'An open-source system also allows us a greater opportunity to be designers and contributors of the tools we use daily,' continues Dan. 'Public libraries and open-source share a common vision of the importance of free and open access to information.'

The library plans to actively participate in the rapidly growing Koha community: 'It is also important to us to participate in the growth of open source within the library community,' says Dan. 'We are excited to be working with LibLime and hope to further the development of Koha jointly with other LibLime clients.'

SCPL has selected LibLime's turnkey Koha ZOOM Appliance solution together with ongoing annual support and maintenance. SCPL is slated to go live in Fall 2008.

About Santa Cruz Public Library

The Santa Cruz Library System serves all of Santa Cruz County except the City of Watsonville, which has an independent Library. It is funded by local property and sales taxes. The library has approximately 235,000 titles in its collection and 61,000 active borrowers. SCPL seeks to provide its patrons with a high level of access to materials in both their collection and to the rapidly growing resources on-line. To do so, they strive to move quickly to adopt new technologies and capitalize on the data available in their system.

<title>PASSENGER SELECTS IONA FUSE FOR ENTERPRISE DEPLOYMENT</title>
<link>http://www.ionatechnologies.com/pressroom/2008/20080225.htm</link>
<description>IONAŽ Technologies (NASDAQ: IONA), a world leader in distributed service-oriented architecture (SOA) infrastructure solutions for performance-demanding IT environments, today announced that PassengerŽ, the technology leader in creating collaborative relationships between brands and their most valued customers, has selected IONA to support its deployment of Apache ActiveMQ, the most popular and powerful Open Source JMS-compliant messaging and integration platform. Passenger will deploy IONA’s FUSE™ Message Broker, which is IONA’s tested, certified and fully supported version of ActiveMQ, to deliver service-oriented integration for Passenger’s customer collaboration platform.

Passenger’s customer collaboration platform is a Web-based platform that offers clients private community forums based on the concepts of social networking. Clients can easily establish online private brand communities to facilitate seamless communications between the company and their customers. The platform is delivered in a software-as-a-service (SaaS) model, enabling easier feature enhancements and customization. Due to the high degree of customization that Passenger offers its customers, the company required the efficiency and flexibility offered by an SOA integration infrastructure. Passenger evaluated both commercially licensed and Open Source options and selected ActiveMQ as the preferred solution.

“We take a best of breed approach to technology,” said Bill Parducci, CTO, Passenger. “We quickly established that ActiveMQ was the best technology on the market for SOA enablement based on a messaging infrastructure, particularly as our solution is offered over the Web using the SaaS delivery model. However, because it was critically important for us to have enterprise-level service and support for a successful roll-out, we required a solution with a first class support structure. IONA provided us with the ability to take the best technology on the market in the form of ActiveMQ and confidently deploy a tested and certified version of that technology together with the required level of enterprise consultancy and support with FUSE Message Broker.”

FUSE is IONA’s tested and certified Open Source product family based on popular projects hosted by the Apache Software Foundation. IONA provides professional support, consulting and training for enterprise customers looking to deploy Open Source SOA technology in mission-critical business applications. While the FUSE Message Broker provides the fundamental infrastructure for Passenger’s SOA infrastructure, the company has adopted additional Open Source products from IONA’s FUSE product family to extend and enhance its SOA capabilities. As with FUSE Message Broker, each of these products is a certified, tested and fully supported release of a technology developed at the Apache Software Foundation. Passenger uses the FUSE Services Framework, based on Apache CXF, to enable web services and FUSE Mediation Router, based on Apache Camel, to easily implement messaging patterns.

“A robust, enterprise-scale production and support infrastructure was key to our decision to adopt Open Source technology,” explained Bill Parducci. “IONA’s professional services team is truly first class and from our first engagement we knew the team had the experience with the technology and were highly skilled in the delivery of mission-critical consultancy and support to Global 2000 customers. The IONA team did more than address basic configuration questions for ActiveMQ. They understood our requirements and helped to set the direction for our architecture. They introduced us to valuable features and capabilities of the technology that we would not have been aware of, had we decided to deploy ActiveMQ without their assistance. Yes, they provide 24x7 production support, and we do require that, but there is also great value in IONA’s ability to apply its breadth of experience in integration architecture and depth of technical product knowledge to our specific requirements.”

“We’re delighted to be selected by Passenger in the roll-out of their Open Source based SOA infrastructure,” said Larry Alston, Vice President and General Manager Open Source, IONA Technologies. “Robust technology alone is not enough, enterprise customers require a complete solution, and that means it must be backed-up by the right level of enterprise service and support, technical expertise and deep industry experience. Passenger is a clear example of the kind of support companies are looking for in their evaluation and adoption of Open Source technology.”

Further information on IONA FUSE is available at the FUSE community Web site at http://open.iona.com. The site also offers discussion forums, wikis, tutorials, sample applications and documentation designed to help users at all stages of their FUSE adoption.

<title>John Rose Joins LibLime as VP, Strategic Markets</title>
<link>http://liblime.com/news-items/press-releases/john-rose-joins-liblime-as-vp-strategic-markets/</link>
<description>ATHENS, OH--February 20, 2008--LibLime, the leader in open-source solutions for libraries, announced today that industry veteran John Rose has joined LibLime as VP, Strategic Markets.

'We're delighted to add John's knowledgebase, talent and 15 years of experience in the library industry to our team,' says Joshua Ferraro, CEO of LibLime. 'John comes to us with an excellent reputation for building strong customer relationships and a focus on service over products -- traits that are essential when helping libraries transition from proprietary to open-source solutions.'

John comes to LibLime from CQ Press, where he was National Sales Manager. Prior to CQ Press, John served as Director of Eastern Region Sales for Endeavor Information Systems and as Eastern Region Sales Manager for Dynix. He holds a bachelors in political science from the State University of New York at Albany. John will help develop and execute sales strategies at LibLime.

'Since I came to the library world in 1993, I have been privileged to have witnessed and participated in many exciting technological changes,' says John. 'But, nothing is as exciting as seeing the appearance of a real alternative to proprietary ILS systems in the open-source Koha ILS movement.'

John believes that open source has much to offer the library industry: 'Now that we have learned the lesson from the demise of vendor-centric systems in Horizon 8.0, Taos (and so many others) we can all benefit from software that cannot possibly be terminated. Koha is open-source code that can never be put back in the box.'

'In fact, that’s the point of open-source software,' John adds. 'It can’t be killed through mergers, bad corporate decision-making or just plain negligence of libraries' requests for enhancements. Koha is free, supported, growing and increasingly powerful as 100% of the user-supported functional enhancements are added to every release.'

John is excited to join LibLime, and looks forward to working with a customer-focused company. He says: 'I am extremely impressed with the team at LibLime. They are an amazing departure from the legacy companies that have forgotten about their core constituency (librarians) and their core mission – to develop the most robust, technologically progressive ILS possible.'

John points out that--in a market that has seen the darker side of venture capital companies--LibLime is privately owned and service-based. 'Unlike venture capital companies, the organizational character of LibLime is--by the very nature of the open-source movement--going to be focused on the needs of librarians and the library community.'

About LibLime

LibLime is the global leader in open-source solutions for libraries, with a mission to make open source accessible to libraries. Rather than sell software licenses for static, hard-to-customize software products, LibLime educates libraries about the benefits of open source, enabling them to make choices about how best to provide their communities and staff with better technology services. <title>MassCat Consortium Chooses Koha ZOOM</title>
<link>http://liblime.com/news-items/press-releases/masscat-consortium-chooses-koha-zoom/</link>
<description>ATHENS, OH - February 12, 2008 - LibLime, the leader in open-source solutions for libraries announced today that MassCat--a resource sharing network for over 100 libraries in Massachusetts--has selected the Koha ZOOM for their next integrated library system (ILS) and union catalog.

MassCat is a multi-type library consortium with membership consisting of school, medical, historical, special, academic and public libraries.

MassCat has selected the hosted Koha ZOOM solution, wherein the installation will be hosted at one of LibLime's carrier-class data centers. LibLime will be providing MassCat with software installation, data migration, on-site training, and ongoing support services.

'Since LibLime will be hosting our database on their servers, we will not need to worry about having to purchase, store and run our own servers and network,' says Nora Blake, Manager of MassCat. 'It will allow us to focus more of our time and effort on training, member relations and system development.'

Nora says that Koha's open-source platform and development model is a primary reason that MassCat chose the system: 'One of the biggest reasons MassCat chose Koha ZOOM was because it is an open-source system. We like the idea that we can directly contribute to the development of the system and that our development decisions will actually have a more immediate impact on our library users than they would if we were attempting to convince a proprietary system vendor to put our needs before those of another customer. We are also pleased that any development that we decide to sponsor will contributed back to the rest of the community of Koha users so that they can benefit as well. Development won’t just be 'quick fixes' that are made just for us – everyone will grow together.'

'We really like the robust searching capabilities of the system. Search results make sense related to the terms used to search with!' says Nora. She adds: 'We also like the features that library users can take advantage of from their own accounts and we believe the clientele of our member libraries will also enjoy having the ability to do more and more easily manage their library accounts.'

MassCat is the fifth US consortium to select LibLime's Koha ZOOM in the last six months. 'We've found that every consortia has a different definition of the word and slightly different approach to resource sharing,' says Joshua Ferraro, LibLime's CEO. 'Koha offers a flexible platform for addressing the needs of some consortia; a platform that does not require that all libraries in a consortia switch to the same ILS in order to share resources.'

<title>Marc Roberson Joins LibLime As VP, Library Partners</title>
<link>http://liblime.com/news-items/press-releases/marc-roberson-joins-liblime/</link>
<description>ATHENS, OH--February 7, 2008--LibLime, the leader in open-source solutions for libraries, announced today that Marc Roberson has joined LibLime as VP, Library Partners.

In his role at LibLime, Roberson will work with libraries to identify longterm software strategies and open-source solutions to meet their needs.

Roberson comes to LibLime from SirsiDynix, where he served as VP, Strategic Accounts. He joined Dynix in 2002, having spent the previous seven years as a regional account manager at Innovative Interfaces. In all, Roberson brings with him nearly 20 years of experience in sales and sales management, serving over 15 of those years in the library industry.

'We're thrilled to have Marc join our growing team,' says Joshua Ferraro, CEO of LibLime. 'Marc has industry experience and a customer focus, both of which are essential to help facilitate participation in the open-source process.'

Marc welcomes the opportunity to help usher in the new era of library innovation and collaboration made possible through open source: 'Who knows what libraries need better than the people who actually work in one?' he says. 'Librarians have traditionally been told by software developers what they should want, how it should look and work and when they can get it. This traditional model served many well for a number of years, educating librarians on how systems operate and sometimes, to their frustration, keeping them from doing what they really wanted. Open source solutions give librarians the opportunity to implement ideas and solutions they want and share those ideas and solutions with others.'

<title>Three Florida Academic Libraries Move to Koha</title>
<link>http://liblime.com/news-items/press-releases/waldo-florida/</link>
<description>ATHENS, OH - January 21, 2008 - LibLime, the leader in open-source solutions for libraries, and WALDO (Westchester Academic Library Directors Organization) have announced that three academic WALDO libraries-- Clearwater Christian College, Florida Southern College, and Southeastern University --have selected Koha ZOOM for their next integrated library system (ILS) and union catalog.

The libraries have selected LibLime's fully-managed Koha ZOOM Hosted package. In this model, the system is installed, operated and maintained at one of LibLime's carrier-class data centers. LibLime will provide the libraries with installation, data migration, systems administration, ongoing maintenance, software development, and staff training. Joining the WALDO consortium will enable the three libraries to share resources, and take advantage of the discounts available to WALDO members for LibLime services.

'We are excited about all the possibilities of open source,' says Grace L. Veach, Library Services Director Southeastern University. 'While Liblime will provide the technical expertise that we lack, WALDO libraries will give us a block of common users; most academic libraries have similar basic needs, and with the WALDO group we will be able to afford more development for academic libraries than we could by ourselves.'

'Our biggest initial hesitation about open source was our lack of in-house technical knowledge,' continues Veach. 'With Liblime providing that knowledge, open-source software becomes a viable and economical choice.'

Michael Clater--Director at Clearwater Christian College--says ease-of-use and no vendor lockin were key to their library's decision to move to Koha: 'In looking at the selection of library systems, our staff was struck with Koha's ease-of-use and user-friendly functionality. This was the biggest selling point, along with the prospect of never having to migrate systems due to a product's end-of-life. We see this as positioning us well strategically in the library community as we see the shift in library system trends and increasingly open access to software and information.'

'Our library staff was impressed with the versatility of LibLime and with opportunities to share in the further development of the product through our association with WALDO,' says Randall M. MacDonald, Interim Director of Roux Library at Florida Southern College. 'The move to an open-source product after twenty years of automation is a natural progression for our library as we move to a more powerful system for our students and faculty in Lakeland, Orlando, and Ocala.'

Other advantages of choosing a LibLime solution through the WALDO consortium include volume discounts, standard contracts, consolidated renewals and invoicing and centralized billing. Participation in the LibLime discounts through WALDO are available to all WALDO full, associate and limited members.

<title>WALDO Consortium Selects Koha ZOOM</title>
<link>http://liblime.com/news-items/press-releases/waldo-consortium-selects-koha-zoom</link>
<description>PHILADELPHIA, PA - January 11, 2008 - LibLime, the leader in open-source solutions for libraries, and WALDO (Westchester Academic Library Directors Organization) have announced that 15 academic WALDO libraries have selected Koha ZOOM for their next integrated library system (ILS) and union catalog.

As part of the agreement, WALDO has commissioned LibLime to substantially enhance Koha to meet the requirements of academic libraries. Enhancement specifications were developed jointly by LibLime and WALDO during the course of a scoping study completed in the Spring of 2007 and include over 35 functional areas. LibLime's Koha ZOOM solution will provide WALDO members with a complete integrated library automation solution, including acquisitions and serials modules, as well as a union catalog. The migration of the full members will begin with a pilot implementation at St. John’s University, Queens, New York, in the Spring/Summer of 2008 followed by the migration of the other 14 libraries pending success of the pilot.

“WALDO’s membership was impressed with the advanced capabilities and architecture in Koha, which included many features and functionality not available in current proprietary ILS systems,” says Linda Poston, WALDO President. “WALDO chose Koha ZOOM because it presented the best architectural fit for WALDO, offering data and policy independence for individual libraries and institutions. WALDO decided to sponsor some additional features and functionality to better support the needs and workflow of academic libraries. Sponsored development will expand acquisitions, serials and cataloging modules. It is exciting to have such a significant role in and timely response to development needs expressed by our membership,” explains Poston.

“A major attraction of the open source model is the opportunity it affords for libraries to exercise direct control over the development and evolutionary pace of their systems,” says Theresa Maylone, University Librarian at St. John’s University. “This control is critical to any successful enterprise and libraries are no exception.'

WALDO has incorporated funding of on-going development into its commitment to open source. Participating libraries will initially contribute 20% of operating costs to a special development fund to insure the ability to keep up with the pace of technology and with the accelerating expectations of academic library users. “Such a commitment is now possible financially because the lower overall costs of operating on the open source model,” Maylone explains.

The initial development project and phased migration of the WALDO academic consortium members is part of a broader WALDO/LibLime agreement that provides for migration, support, hosting and development services at reduced prices for all participating WALDO members.

“There is widespread interest in open source among the broader WALDO membership and WALDO encourages libraries who are not currently members of WALDO to explore the advantages of joining the consortium,” says John Stromquist, Executive Director of WALDO. “Advantages include volume discounts, standard contracts, consolidated renewals and invoicing and centralized billing. Participation in the LibLime discounts through WALDO are available to all WALDO full, associate and limited members,” Stromquist explains.

<title>SourceKibitzer eyes multi-location software teams</title>
<link>http://www.sourcekibitzer.com</link>
<description>SourceKibitzer OÜ, the leading expert and visibility solutions provider for virtual and multi-location software development teams, today announced EyeQ – an advanced analytics solution to add transparency into multi-location software development teams. SourceKibitzer EyeQ provides you with bi-monthly reports containing objective information about contribution, know-how and expertise of distributed software teams and all that in a handy PDF format.

Instead of tracking hours and tasks or evaluating software quality, EyeQ reports revolve around developer's knowledge and expertise. Importance of these indicators is greatly undervalued by modern analytics tools. SourceKibitzer EyeQ solution is targeted at overcoming this by providing professional and high-level indicators useful not only for software specialists, but even more for high-level managers and customers of software development houses.

As a result, SourceKibitzer EyeQ report creates a high-level, unique and verifiable reputation layer on top of software development team. Although none of the metrics alone may provide an accurate and complete portrait, sophisticated metric combinations used by EyeQ reports create a nuanced and accurate description of each developer’s achievements. The higher-level contributor indicators you will find in each report include:

*Know-how score: Indicates a developer's breadth of knowledge in the analyzed software and scored on a 1-to-10 scale. The whole score combines developer's unique and shared know-hows. While former illustrates the knowledge possessed only by this developer, the latter indicates shared with other team members.
* Size of personal contributions: Uses the code’s syntax to measure size in terms of code statements rather than a less accurate, format-dependent count of lines of code
* Complexity: Uses multiple software metrics to measure complexity of the code produced by the developer
* Activity: Indication of developer or team activity during the 2 week period of time. It measures the number of components and frequency of modifications made to them by the given developer (or team).
Software project stakeholders benefit through increasing trust between each other: difficulties peculiar to multi-location software development are solved more easier in a friendly and open environment supported by regular objective information about the team as a whole and each team member alone.

'Surprisingly, we see a lot of developers glad to be measured by 3rd parties like SourceKibitzer. It gives them a chance to identify their strenghts and weaknesses sketching the direction for improvement.” noted Mark Kofman, CEO and co-founder of SourceKibitzer. “Still the main value of EyeQ lies in making software development more visible for the management and building trust into relations between software services providers and their customers.”

SourceKibitzer EyeQ is delivered through Software as a Service model. It is easy to set-up and will not affect your business or software development processes. Unlike, time-tracking or typical project lifecycle management tools, there is no human input needed to collect the information about your project.

For more complete details on the SourceKibitzer EyeQ solution, see http://www.sourcekibitzer.com.</description>

Debra Denault has over fifteen years experience in the library automation industry. Debra’s most recent position was Associate Director of Development with VTLS Inc, where she also worked as the Product Manager for the VIRTUA Integrated Library System. She has also held senior positions with Ex Libris USA and Dynix Canada. Debra has a Master of Library and Information Science degree from the University of Western Ontario (London, Canada).

As a librarian, Debra's focus was on Library Systems Management. Through her work at several prominent ILS companies, she has gained valuable experience in system design, product management, project management, software testing, training, and customer service.

'Debra is an experienced operations manager who has worked on both sides of the fence: as both a librarian and as a vendor. So, she understands the importance of customer service, and how to make business work for--instead of against--the library community,' says Joshua Ferraro, President Technology at LibLime. 'LibLime's customers are going to benefit tremendously from Debra's expertise in managing development and implementation projects. She will be working with our tech team to coordinate some very large migrations and development work in the months to come.'

“I am very excited about working with LibLime and being part of a team of dedicated people working on the cutting edge of library automation and open-source software technology,” says Debra.

<title>LibLime Welcomes Three Industry Experts to Tech Team</title>
<link>http://liblime.com/news-items/press-releases/liblime-welcomes-three-industry-experts-to-tech-team/</link>
<description>LibLime, the leader in open-source solutions for libraries, announced today that three industry experts have joined LibLime's technology staff: Galen Charlton joins LibLime as Software Engineer, Library Systems; Chris Catalfo will specialize in software development; and Joe Atzberger will serve as Systems Administrator.

Earlier this week, LibLime announced their new offices to accommodate the rapid growth they are experiencing and today's announcement underscores that growth through the addition of three new team members. Consistent with the core mission of open-source software companies, these new members are focused on providing superior service to the LibLime community.

'It's a real honor to have these three guys joining our team,' says Joshua Ferraro, LibLime's President of Technology. 'We've already seen the community and the projects we support benefit tremendously from their combined expertise. Galen has nine years of experience working for a major proprietary company and comes highly recommended from the clients he has supported.'

Ferraro continues: 'Chris got his start at LibLime as a 2007 Google Summer of Code intern. In three short months, he's created an impressive web-based copy cataloging system which will be unveiled early 2008. Joe Atzberger (formerly of INFOhio) has strong knowledge of PERL and valuable experience managing and supporting integrated library systems.'

Galen Charlton joins LibLime from Endeavor (formerly Ex Libris), where he specialized in ILS and ERMS migrations for the last nine years. Galen has a proven track record in the library automation industry and has worked with over two hundred libraries to perform timely and successful migrations for ILS, electronic resource management, and digital collection management products. Galen has a B.S. in Mathematics from Millersville University. While at Millersville, he performed one of the first Dynix to Voyager data migrations. He is also an experienced programmer in several languages including C++, Perl, and Java on Solaris and Linux.

'I've joined LibLime for the opportunity to participate in open-source software for libraries,' says Galen. 'I'm hoping to help usher in a new wave of ideas and a community-driven process for library automation.'

Chris Catalfo joins LibLime as a software developer. He is a fluent perl programmer with extensive web development background. Chris graduated from Loyola College with a degree in International Business. In addition to a Master's in Italian, Chris is currently completing a Master's in Library Science. He worked for several years in academic libraries--including The Johns Hopkins University and University of North Carolina-- doing cataloging of monographs and rare books as well as developing scripts working with bibliographic records. He developed a web-based cataloging system to allow catalogers to search remote databases and catalog MARC records in an integrated editor as a part of his 2007 Google Summer of Code internship. He is excited to join LibLime to help libraries reach their goals using open-source software.

Joe Atzberger comes from INFOhio, where he managed automation systems and integration for 250 K-12 school libraries throughout the state of Ohio. Joe has a degree in Computer and Information Science and English Literature + Criticism (with Honors) from Ohio State University. He has joined the LibLime team as Systems Administrator.

<title>Clean separation in PHP</title>
<link>http://www.techdivision.com/fileadmin/content_Bilder/was_wir_tun/Portal-Loesungen/struts4php_PHPMag.pdf</link>
<description>There a now several possibilities to separate code from the underlying HTML/XML output in PHP. But why shouldn’t we use a solution repeatedly used in other programming languages? We are talking about the Apache Open Source project Jakarta Struts. Several Java-developers will now probably perk their ears. Struts, yes, but in PHP? Here are some explanations for all those who are not so familiar with Java:

The Struts Framework is a web application framework implementing the Model View Controller Design Pattern. This MVC pattern is popular in greater projects to get a clean separation of business logic and data or data storage and to set up a component based software architecture. The above mentioned pattern belongs to the structure- and architecture patterns. Struts controls the workflow of the system, thus being the controller component performing business logics in accordance with the action required and returning data...

<title>Howard County Library Chooses Koha</title>
<link>http://liblime.com/news-items/press-releases/howard-county-library-chooses-koha/</link>
<description>ATHENS, OH--October 3, 2007--LibLime, the leader in open-source solutions for libraries, announced today that Howard County Library in Columbia, MD USA, has selected LibLime's Koha ZOOM Appliance solution as the library's next integrated library system. Koha is the first and most advanced open-source integrated library system.

In choosing Koha ZOOM, Howard County Library is proving once again why they are widely known as a leader among libraries. The six-branch library has approximately 1 million items in their collection and circulates close to 5 million materials each year.

Howard County Library has been paving the way to open source for libraries since 2005 with their deployment of Linux and other open-source applications. Open-source applications are first choice for the Library, due to the robustness and flexibility of the development model. 'Howard County Library is committed to using open-source software whenever and wherever it is appropriate,' says Amy De Groff, the Library's Head of Library Technology Services, 'Moving to an open-source ILS was a natural choice for us.'

De Groff says that the desire to steer the direction of their own technology was at the heart of Howard County's decision to move from their proprietary ILS to Koha ZOOM: 'Koha was less expensive than other ILS vendors, will allow us to use existing hardware, and is operating-system independent. Koha allows us to provide services to our customers and make our own decisions about the software we run on our desktops -- other ILS options required us to deploy software they want. We prefer to use taxpayer dollars for collections and other core services -- such as our hardware and popular classes, seminars, and workshops.'

Howard County chose LibLime's turnkey Koha ZOOM Appliance solution as well as ongoing support. 'LibLime's commitment to superior customer service matches our own,' says De Groff. The solution includes hardware selection, installation and configuration, data migration, training and ongoing technical support.

About Howard County Library

<title>Canada/Manitoba Business Service Centre Chooses Koha</title>
<link>http://liblime.com/news-items/press-releases/manitoba-business-service-centre-chooses-koha/</link>
<description>

ATHENS, OH -September 18, 2007- LibLime, the leader in open-source solutions for libraries, announced today that the Canada/Manitoba Business Service Centre in Manitoba, Canada has selected LibLime's Koha Classic Hosted solution. Koha is the first and most widely deployed open-source integrated library system (ILS).

Oliver Bernuetz, Head of Library Services at the Centre, says that Canada/Manitoba Business Service Centre (CMBSC) selected Koha to reduce costs and take advantage of the user-centric development model. 'Price was certainly a consideration. It would cost thousands more to get all the features of Koha with a proprietary system. More importantly though, are the possibilities with Koha. The idea of being able to get desired changes incorporated without having to persuade an ILS vendor of their need is great,' says Bernuetz.

Like many corporate and government libraries, CMBSC opted for LibLime's Koha Classic Hosted solution. 'The hosted LibLime option was also a major consideration as it removes the need for our own on-site server.' The solution will be hosted at LibLime's Toronto data center.

Since Koha's interfaces are entirely web-based, CMBSC users and staff will now be able to access the reference library catalog from the comfort of their own office or home. Their system will go live in September 2007.

About the Canada/Manitoba Business Service Centre

The Canada/Manitoba Business Service Centre is a partnership between the Government of Canada and the Province of Manitoba. CMBSC delivers a wide range of business related services in Manitoba on behalf of 38 federal government departments and organizations, 13 provincial government departments and five private sector partners. CMBSC Reference Library has one of the Canada's most extensive collections of business, trade and industrial publications. They also offer video and audio tapes, magazines, periodicals, newspapers, CD-ROMs, databases and directories, free of charge.

<title>Central Kansas Consortium Chooses Koha</title>
<link>http://liblime.com/news-items/press-releases/central-kansas-consortium-chooses-koha/</link>
<description>

ATHENS, OH -September 11, 2007- LibLime, the leader in open-source solutions for libraries, announced today that the Central Kansas Library System--one of seven regional library systems in Kansas, and serving 17 counties in the state--has selected Koha ZOOM for 'Pathfinder Central', a new region-wide ILS consortium.

A project of the Central Kansas Library System (CKLS), 'Pathfinder Central' is a new public library automation and lending network serving 31 libraries in 17 counties of central Kansas. LibLime's Koha ZOOM solution will provide Pathfinder Central members with a shared integrated library automation system, including a web-based union catalog and integrated circulation, acquisitions and serials control modules.

James Swan, Administrator of CKLS says, 'Pathfinder Central is unique in Kansas because it is the first regional library system to develop a system-wide ILS consortium. Pathfinder Central will automate more libraries in a single project than any other system in Kansas. The goal in the next three years is to automate as many of the public libraries in Central Kansas as want to participate.'

CKLS chose LibLime's fully-managed Koha ZOOM Hosted package. In this model, the system is installed, operated and maintained at one of LibLime's data centers. LibLime will provide CKLS with installation, data migration, systems administration, ongoing maintenance, software development, and staff training.

Freedom to customize was a major consideration in their decision. Swan explains, 'An overwhelming majority of CKLS librarians that wanted to participate in the project said they preferred Koha ZOOM over other ILS options. With Koha ZOOM, CKLS won't have to wait to develop features the librarians want in the automation system they use. They won’t have to wait for the commercial vendor to decide to include a suggestion in the next release of the software.'

'We believe the Open Source model, embodied by Koha ZOOM, reflects the spirit of public libraries. Funding projects that benefit everyone means more libraries will switch to open-source library automation and sponsor new developments that other libraries will benefit from too. CKLS libraries will be able to grow with Koha ZOOM for a long, long time.' says Swan.

Pathfinder Central is set to go live in early 2008.

About Central Kansas Library System

The Central Kansas Library System is one of seven Regional Systems of Cooperating Libraries that were created in 1965 to provide legal access to library service for everyone in Kansas—extending library service to the unserved. The mission of the Central Kansas Library System is to help member libraries give their patrons what they want by extending library service to the unserved and improving library service where it already exists. Central Kansas Library System supports library services in 17 counties over an area of some 13,988 sq. miles. To learn more about CKLS, please visit their website: http://www.ckls.org.

About LibLime

As the leader in open-source solutions for libraries, LibLime offers a refreshing alternative to expensive proprietary software. Rather than sell software licenses for static, hard-to-customize software products, LibLime promotes the benefits of open source, enabling libraries to make choices about how best to provide their communities and staff with better technology services. LibLime enables libraries to use open-source software to its full potential by providing outstanding commercial support services - hosting, migration assistance, staff training, support, software maintenance, and development--solutions tailored to each customer's needs.

Use of open source not only lowers the per-library cost of running software, it also empowers libraries with a higher level of control over customization and the overall direction of software development.

About Koha

Since it was first put into production in early 2000, Koha has enabled new realities of open access, affordability, and free innovation for a diverse community of hundreds of academic, consortia, public, special collection, religious and school libraries around the globe.

Veitshöchheim, Germany - August 23, 2007 - Become an efficient Perl programmer: Perl Bootcamp in Frankfurt, November 12-16, 2007

Big Nerd Ranch Europe is pleased to announce a new opportunity to learn intermediate Perl programming under the leadership of Perl expert, brian d foy. The intensive five-day training taught at the retreat environment of Kloster Eberbach near Frankfurt, Germany is scheduled for November 12-16, 2007. Perl is a dynamic programming language used for a wide range of tasks including system administration, web development, network programming, database manipulation, GUI application development and more. Intermediate Perl Bootcamp is ideal for everyone interested in learning how to use Perl as a programming language, and not just a scripting language.

Students signing up before October 5, 2007 apply for the early bird fee and save €200.

This intensive five-day class is the fastest way to master the ideas and techniques of Perl programming by doing everything more effectively, efficiently, and elegantly. Intermediate Perl Bootcamp helps students to make the leap from the easy things to the hard ones and become a real Perl programmer.

All students attending the class receive a copy of the O'Reilly book 'Intermediate Perl, second edition' (commonly referred to as the Alpaca book) as the primary text for the class. For best results the course requires some previous experience in using the Perl language. The course is ideal for programmers who have completed the O'Reilly Nutshell book, 'Learning Perl', or who otherwise have a good background in the basics of Perl.

At the end of the five day Perl Bootcamp, students will emerge fully skilled in the ability to develop complex Perl applications using Perl Objects, References, and Modules. Other key topics include, but are not limited to:

	•	implement object-oriented concepts in Perl
	•	use packages and namespaces
	•	manage references and scoping
	•	manipulate complex data structures
	•	create reusable modules for individual use or for distribution
	•	test and debug Perl code
	•	contribute to CPAN

brian d foy has achieved distinction in the Perl community as a co-author of works for O'Reilly, including 'Learning Perl (4th Edition)' and 'Intermediate Perl'. He is also known for his publication of The Perl Review, the only print magazine devoted to Perl. He has presented at numerous conferences and created the first ever Perl user group, the New York Perl Mongers, and founded and runs the non-profit Perl-advocacy foundation, Perl Mongers, Inc., devoted to the establishment and promotion of Perl user groups throughout the world. Given his level of expertise, knowledge, and renown in the Perl community, brian d foy's exceptional gifts as a long-time instructor of Perl programming add an extraordinary value rarely found in this combination.

'There are many gifted programmers in the world who are passionate about their subject areas. However, passion doesn't always translate into the ability to communicate information to fellow users in a classroom setting,' mused Aaron Hillegass, Big Nerd Ranch founder. 'brian is an exceptional engineer and instructor. The Big Nerd Ranch is excited to have a powerhouse like brian instructing one of our bootcamps, especially one so content-rich as Perl. If you need to learn to use Perl effectively, sign up for the class before your seat is gone.'
